Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan has increased, and downtown areas and tourist sites in Tokyo are filled with people of various nationalities. Everyone looks happy, and seeing that makes me happy too.
There was once a critic who described Japan as a "bad place," but now people all over the world recognize Japan as a "good place" with its unique culture rooted in a long history.
I tried to express this feeling of mine frankly through "photography." However, in recent years in Japan, street photography as a photographic culture has been forced to shrink due to delicate issues surrounding society.
So, as one solution to this, I came up with the idea of adding human figures created by AI to photos I took myself. These figures have been cleared of both copyright and portrait rights by Adobe Photo Stock. The expressions of the people replaced by AI are lively and rich, and are so realistic that it is difficult to say that "AI does not have human-like emotions."
Since its invention in the 19th century, photography has been seen as an "automated generation of paintings" that replaced hand-drawn art, forcing many artists out of work. However, it also gave birth to a new art form, beginning with Impressionism, and photography itself developed as an art form, eventually leading to the current remarkable advances in digital technology that have led to AI art.
So I created this work with feelings of congratulations for the people of Japan and the world, and for the technological advances of humanity.
コロナ禍明けの昨今、日本を訪れる外国人観光客は以前より増加し、東京都内の繁華街や観光地も多種多様な国籍の人たちであふれています。その表情はみな一様にうれしそうで、それを見る私自身もまたうれしい気分になります。
かつて日本を｢悪い場所」と評した評論家がおりましたが、今や世界中の人々が、長い歴史に根差した特有の文化を持つ日本を「良い場所」と認めているのです。
私は自分のこの感覚を率直に「写真」で表現しようとしました。ところが近年の日本では、写真文化としてのストリート写真は、社会をとりまくデリケートな問題により、ともすれば萎縮せざるを得ない状況にあります。
そこで私はこの打開策の一つとして、自ら撮影した写真に、生成AIによる人物像を加える表現を思い立ちました。これら人物像はAdobe Photo Stockにより著作権と肖像権をともにクリアされています。AIによりすげ替えられた人々の表情は活き活きとして豊かで「AIには人間のような感情がない」と言いきれない程リアルです。
そもそも写真は19世紀の発明当初から、手描きに取って代わる「自動生成絵画」の意味合いがあり、多くの画家を失業に追い込みました。しかし一方で、印象派にはじまる新しいアートが産まれ、「写真」もまたアートとして発展することになり、現在のデジタル技術のめざましい進歩を経て「AIアート」にまで至ったのです。
そこで私は本作品を、日本と世界の人々に対する「祝福」の気持ち、人類の技術発展に対する「祝福」の気持ちを込め、制作したのです。

The "Generative Fill" function in Adobe Photoshop can be used in a variety of ways, but in this work, a part of a photo is selected and "Generative Fill" is used to replace the subject with a fictional AI-generated character. This portrait is based on an Adobe Photo Stock photo, and both portrait rights and copyright have been cleared.
アドビ フォトショップに搭載された「生成塗りつぶし」機能にはさまざまな使用法が考えられますが、本作品では写真の一部を選択し、その箇所を「生成塗りつぶし」することにより、被写体の人物をAI生成による架空の人物に置き換えています。この人物像はAdobe Photo Stockの写真を素材としており、肖像権と著作権が共にクリアされています。
